Details of our STEM Education Involvement

QinetiQ is an international defence technology organisation. The Company provides research, technical advice, technology solutions and services to customers in core markets of defence, security, energy & environment and related markets. The Company has 40+ sites in the UK with over 150 STEM Ambassadors at a number of locations.
QinetiQ is committed to science, technology, engineering and mathematics outreach programmes which engage young people in a variety of STEM activities. Capitalising on the expertise and enthusiasm of our employees as STEM practitioners, the STEM Ambassadors programme is pivotal to all interactions with pupils, primarily at 11-14 years.
Understanding and meeting the needs of a school is key; with Ambassadors providing support which is wholly relevant whether that be through support to the curriculum on a specific STEM topic; science festivals; after school clubs or careers talks.
Ambassadors are trained in and have access to practical activities to engage youngsters in a way which is real and relevant to everyday life. Students can test the properties of materials, learning about composites for making safety headgear or armoured cars. By using LEGO Mindstorms pupils can develop skills in robotics, programming and teamwork.
Other activities include CREST in a Day; support for Smallpeice Trust school STEM Days and residential engineering courses and Lab in a Lorry where pupils undertake 3 practical experiments extracting oil from the seabed; learn about sound waves and light scattering. Over 11,000 pupils have benefited from a visit to the lorry
We do not develop teaching resources but focus on collaboration with key national initiatives, delivered in partnership with national bodies such as STEMNET; Institute of Physics; British Science Association; Smallpeice Trust; Nuffield Foundation; SSAT and others. This approach provides pupils with an opportunity to achieve valuable nationally recognised awards such as CREST at various levels.
