Science at Work Event - Dowdales School, Cumbria

I have spent much of the weekend mulling over the 'Science at Work' event at Dowdales School on Friday 1st February 2013. It represents the type of exploration for children I have in the past felt was missing and something I was interested to rectify, if only a school would ask.

Topcliffe Primary, Castle Vale Birmignham take on the Christmas Card Challenge

Six of our ambassadors supported an Enterprise Day held at the University of Birmingham run by Enabling Enterprise and the university's Outreach team. Before Mike Zatyka, from Enabling Enterprise, welcomed Year 5 students from Topcliffe School in Castle Vale, he met up with the STEM Ambassadors who volunteered to support the students. With many current and former students as well as some guests from industry making up the volunteer team, it was clear the students would get a crash course in what Higher Education was all about.

Girls have fun with Pi - taking Raspberry Pi to the classroom

Last week saw the Raspberry Pi engaging young people with computing at an event at Fairfield High School for Girls in Tameside. It's great to see how well the Pi goes down with young people, the folks it was designed for!

The pupils got to grips with both Python and Scratch, with basic interfacing and control building games and reaction timers. The now famous Twitter Chicken also made an appearance and was well received, with the students wanting to build their own.

DEBP were having a stand at the event and wanted STEM Ambassadors to support with giving out information on the STEM subjects, whilst also sharing their own story about getting into a STEM career, why they made the decisions they did and so on.  Clive Breen from Rolls-Royce plc and Amanda Jackson from Derby Hospitals NHS Trust responded and were a fantastic support throughout the evening.
