Royal Institution masterclasses are interactive speaker-led sessions which allow bright and talented young people to explore exciting areas of mathematics. We have several series in Cumbria and Lancashire and are looking for enthusiastic ambassadors who would like to develop and deliver their own masterclass, based on their favourite mathematical topic, with full support and training from the Ri masterclass team. To find out how you can get involved, please contact maths@ri.ac.uk you can find out more about our programme at www.rigb.org/maths.

What I can offer to schools

I am passionate about Physics and science in general, and feel that I would be able to pass on this enthusiasm to pupils so that they develop an interest in the world around them, and encourage their development in the fields of STEM.

Year 9 event on Friday 21st June.
Starting at 9.30 am, this will involve pupils in teams of 4, spending about 2 hours building hovercrafts (paper/card versions with electric fan). They will then race the crafts.
This will be followed by lunch and then from about 12.30 -1.30 pm talking to STEM ambassadors, still in their teams of 4, on a kind of speed meet arrangement. Each team would spend about 6 minutes with each ambassador and then move on. Each team will see about 6 ambassadors in total. We would need ideally 15 ambassadors as we hope to have 15 teams.

Technology Challenge
Construct a machine capable of firing table-tennis balls. Using K’NEX kits, make a platform for your launchpad which will allow you to fire the table tennis balls at a target, but also allow you to change the trajectory [angle of launch] so that maximum distance can be achieved. The platform must have wheels so that it can be rolled into position. Sketch this out before you start to build. Take into account what the platform needs to do and design it accordingly.
