Luring pupils to science careers, the sweet way...
Hello,
I had my first STEMNET activity in late April, representing science at a secondary school career's fair for year 10+ pupils.
I didn't have snazzy posters or shiny booklets, nor did I have much props that I could bring but I was determined to make an impression... which I think I did! But how did I do it?

Science at Work Event - Dowdales School, Cumbria
I have spent much of the weekend mulling over the 'Science at Work' event at Dowdales School on Friday 1st February 2013. It represents the type of exploration for children I have in the past felt was missing and something I was interested to rectify, if only a school would ask.

Helping with Year 4 Science Lessons
Helping out with the Year 4 Science Lessons has been really good fun so far! Since I started helping out they have learnt about materials, their properties, the moon and the solar system. I have been helping out during the lessons by answering questions and guiding the children on what they are supposed to be doing, as well as helping them with projects. At the moment they are doing a Solar System Project, where they have to produce at least a page worth of information on each planet, plus Pluto, asteroids and comets if they have time.

Science & Communication conference
I'm planning to organise a conference for 6th formers in Kent on Science & Communication in Sept/Oct 2013 at my school, The King's School, Canterbury.
I'd be interested to hear from any teachers who would like to bring pupils to this, or any specialists in Science & Communication (Public Understanding of Science, Science & Society) who could contribute to the event.

Thanks!

'Design an App Day' BBC Outreach and Future Media Schools Challenge
‘Design an App Day’ was an event held at BBC, MediaCityUK on Friday 16 November, in which teams of Year 9 pupils (from schools across Manchester, Salford and Trafford) took part.
The day was designed to be a positive introduction to BBC North, giving young people a unique opportunity to find out what it's like to work here in our Future Media department. The teams came up with some fantastic creative ideas, which the panel were very impressed with! Nicola Crowther, Senior Project Manager, BBC Outreach

Graduate recruitment at Hendon School
I wasn't one of those people who was recruited through a graduate placement scheme, so I only had some vague ideas as to what I'd like to try to impress upon the ~50 6th formers (er, year 12's) that I was invited to speak to. They'd heard about gap years and university finances earlier on in the day - so I was the last slot. It might've been more straightforward to work with the other presenters, to make a seamless set of talks, but in all reality - it probably wouldn't have fit so well with work...it was a busy week.

Crazy Chemistry Revisited
I was involved in the delivery of a Crazy Chemistry event at Buxton Library in August this year. The event went very well and I was asked if I could deliver another event at Glossop Library during the October half-term. This was too good an offer to pass up. Hence I packed the kitbag and made my way to Glossop Library last Wednesday.
