Year 10 careers info session - Thomas Tallis, Kidbrooke, SE London
Not sure whats worth putting here, so will just do a brain dump...
This was my second STEM activity (first was as a judge on the Olympic themed competition at STEM HQ).
Got the impression that it would be an informal discussion session, but in the end turned out to be a bit more formal than I first thought - there were 2 of us STEM ambassadors and we did a joint presentation about our careers - subjects needed to take and experience gained.
Year 10 were getting a day of higher education/career info - morning was about 6th form taster sessions and university info sessions. The afternoon was about 10 or so different subject sessions - eg dramatic arts, journalism, IT, Engineering and our STEM session.
For some reason I thought they'd be more inquisitive than they were and I need to prepare better myself about things to bring up to fill those quiet moments and/or little exercises to get everyone involved.
Not sure I did a brilliant job of promoting my career/STEM - at least I didnt get booed off nor did anyone fall asleep.

Hi Chris,
Thanks for taking the time to write a blog and for your help at Thomas Tallis, I am sure the students were grateful for your visit.
It's useful to hear that you have commented on ways to think about getting students involved and ways to prompt questions from them. One idea to do this is to take a small unusual item or object from your place of work and get them to guess what it is and how it is used. You could also discuss with other STEM Ambassadors ways to do this - I noticed there is another blog on the homepage where a STEM Ambassador has offered help.
Thanks again for your help.
