Tackling stereotypes as early as possible

A very brief post to get started :-)

I've only just become a STEM ambassador so don't yet have a clear picture of what other people are already doing. One of the things I am keen to do is tackle the perception that you have to be a middle aged white man to do science and I have an idea for a short talk or maybe an assembly using pictures and animations to illustrate who scientists are and what they do.

If anyone would like to talk to me about this in more detail, please do get in touch.

Hi Samantha,
sounds great! I had a recent experience with a group of girls and I brought along some interviews to women Nobel Prize laureate. What we definitively need to tackle is the stereotype that science is not for women!

Thanks, I'll definitely look at those.

You might find it useful to look at some of the Career websites for STEM, Futuremorph and NOISE spring to mind as potential sources of information and maybe video clips and photographs. One activity we do up here is called 'Meet the Professionals', here the ambassador introduces themself and then the students ask questions. the aim is to break down stereotypes and and to introduce students to the wide variety of opportunities in STEM. Following one of our recent sessions the feed back from the Students had 3 main points

1. Scientists can earn good money
2. Scientists travel the world
3. Scientists work as part of a team

Hi,

Something pretty simple really. In brief start with some pictures of some scientists and some random other people and do a guess which one is a scientist. Talk about myself, how I became interested in science and the various things I'm interested in and things I've done i.e scientists don't just do science, they have fun too. Finally show some cool pictures of various science things to illustrate the wide variety of things scientists are involved in and use some of the cool media projects available on the web and talk about how science allows us to learn about things we can't see.
