'Science Buskers' at The Derby High School entertain shoppers in Bury

On Friday 13th July 2012, The Derby High School in Bury joined forces with the STEM team at The Museum of Science and Industry, Manchester to entertain and inform shoppers at Mill Gate Shopping Centre.

A small group of enthusiastic Science Communicators, between the ages of 11 and 13 years, surprised shoppers by performing science tricks including: 'The Magic Hanky' and the 'Expanding Bunny'.

The Derby High School, with their active STEM programme of activities and engagement with the STEM Ambassadors Programme has become one of the Greater Manchester STEMNET team's Flagship Schools.

Paul Kerr, Director of Science at The Derby High, and winner of an Institute of Physics Teachers Award 2012 commented: "Science busking is a great activity to develop students' communication skills and confidence, show off their understanding of scientific concepts and break down some of the stereotypes and mystique about what it means to be a scientist. We had a fantastic response."
