NYBEP "Industry Led Challenges" winning Presentation 2010

Congratulations to the team from Caedmon School, Whitby who are the overall winners from "The Industry led Challenges" for 2009-10 across York and North Yorkshire.

The project was set up in colloboration with IMECHe, British Science Association CREST awards, STEM Ambassadors and supported by Yorkshire Forward.

The Cademon Coastal Climate Team worked on the "Our World in 2050" Engineering challenge set by IMECe, but working over three months to develop their ideas.  The team choose to work on a local "issue" at the heart of their ccomunity in Whitby: the Whitby Piers.

They undertook research into engineering solutions for the piers including proven renewable energy sources but also considering conservation and sustainability issues. The students also had email discussions with Scarborough Borough Council engineers and with the Whitby Harbour Master.

Demonstrating creativity, research skills, teamwork and enterprise skills the students designed new versions of the west and east pier extensions incorporating a tidal reef. They built a model of the harbour and demonstrated their ideas at Venturefest Yorkshire 2010 to both STEM Ambassadors and other Yorkshire entrepeneurs.

The students were filmed by Creative and Media students from York College and copies of the resulting DVD are available.
