Mathematics Event for Gifted and Talented Year 5 Primary School Students
Three STEM Ambassadors (Emma Scott, Keith Plumb and Victor Crawford) ran a successful full day Mathematics event last week. We were tasked to set the children "tricky" problems. There were 24 children from 6 schools.
The day started with introductions to several famous mathematicians. We then ran a series of exercises, 20 minutes each introducing the concepts of Pi, Tesselations, Doubling and others. After lunch we mixed up the groups so that they could experience working with strangers. They worked on a exercise to calculate the best value for money for common supermarket items and a problem to do with aircraft fuelling and how many passengers the pilot could take. The day ended with a treasure hunt which re-inforced the learning from the morning.
The children stayed engaged throughout and we got very positive feedback.
We have the plan and all the exercises available for others to use. Some of the resources are also available and are being kept by Emma at AstraZeneca.

That sounds fanatstic Victor. Is it possible to upload the plan and exercises onto the resource bank on STEMNetworking so others can access them?
