First Edition at Fortismere School in Muswell Hill
On the 11/7/12 I went to Fortismere school in Muswell Hill to assist with a First Edition event day. First Edition is a bit similar to STEMNET and has a lot of the same goals, promoting Engineering, Science, Technology and Maths in schools. They use STEM Ambassadors to support them and give insight into Industry and thats where I was able to offer my time.
I helped with three activities all promoting Engineering type thinking which were as follows: building a rocket out of paper that used a bicyle pump launch pad; building a marble run that would take the longest amount of time for the marble to reach the floor and creating a tower to hold a wooden egg. Of course there were point awarded to the farthest/fasted etc and a prize giving at the end to give the completitive edge.
The part I enjoyed most was understanding the different designs and helping the students come to their own conclusions about what would work best.
In addition to the tasks during the day I also did a careers talk which seemed to go down really well. Talking about careers in London Underground always sparks enthusiasm and interest as it is something that people always know something about and in London have a lot of experience of.

Hi Lawrence,
Thanks so much for your help at Fortismere and for taking the time to write about your experience to share with other STEM Ambassadors.
It sounds like a great day and a fantastic opportunity to talk about your work at London Underground - I expect many children were very excited to hear about what you do!
Thanks for your help.
